Para Badminton

Overview

Para-badminton is an inclusive sport for athletes with physical impairments, making its Paralympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games. It encompasses singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events, providing diverse competitive opportunities.

Events & Disciplines

The Paralympic Games feature men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events, across various classifications based on the type and severity of impairments.

Rules & Equipment

The badminton court measures 13.400 meters in length and 6.100 meters in width overall. Singles players in classes WH1, WH2, and SL3 compete on a singles court, while all other classes and doubles events utilize the full court.

Shuttles are constructed from natural and/or synthetic materials, with flight characteristics akin to those of a natural feathered shuttle featuring a cork base covered by a thin layer of leather.

Rackets have a frame not exceeding 680 mm in length and 230 mm in width, comprising a handle, shaft, throat, head, and stringed area.

Matches consist of the best of three games, with a game won by the side reaching 21 points first, except in the event of a 20-all tie, where the side gaining a two-point lead first wins, or a 29-all tie, where the side scoring the 30th point wins. The winner of each game serves first in the subsequent game.

Additional equipment permitted for Para-badminton includes a wheelchair or crutch. For comprehensive details, please consult the Laws of Badminton provided by the Badminton World Federation.

In wheelchair classes, the court is modified to exclude the back two corners for singles play. Athletes use specialized sports wheelchairs designed for agility and speed on the court.

In standing classes, players may use standard badminton equipment, with allowances for prosthetics and other assistive devices.

Para-badminton highlights athleticism and skill, providing a competitive and inclusive environment for athletes with physical impairments.
